The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
