Her Royal Highness's Traditional Yuletide Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have supported their local areas.

The 1,600 guests will hear a selection of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The theme of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to support families who have a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to public life following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists supported by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the trust, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Sisterly Duo

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Attending the service will be people from various age groups.

That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.

Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
